The “Coteau des Treilles” (monopole) was resurrected in the late 1990s by Jo Pithon. Enjoying an exceptional situation, this hillside had been abandoned after the war because of its steep slopes (from 30 to 70%). After having acquired 70 plots from 25 different owners, Jo reinstalled Chenin on these magmatic rocks of the Armorican Massif.
This plot is located at the heart of the Pont-Barré Natural Reserve, a jewel of protected biodiversity never touched by chemistry. These sunny rocky escarpments are home to flora and fauna of incomparable richness, whiwh were described in the 18th century by the first botanists. The Coteaux du Pont-Barré site, partly owned by Belargus Estate, by the Bird Protection Association (LPO Anjou) and the Angers Academy of Fine Arts, was classified as a Regional Nature Reserve in 2009. This project brings together many local actors (region, department, municipality, associations, scientists, etc.).
The Coteau des Treilles is a very steep plot, facing South and overlooking the Layon river. It is located on a true geological chaos (composed of spilites, schists, sandstone and puddingstones) which transmits its complexity and minerality to the wine.
This singular terroir gives life to a unique cuvée with very long ageing potential. After three years of barrel ageing, it develops a rare aromatic intensity. Without exuberance, this wine expresses a mineral (as opposed to solar) power. A model of tension, balance and energy.
